The Floating Gallery reorients the concept of a traditional gallery. It is a non-commercial, artist-run collective space. It asserts that a gallery is first and foremost a room of requirement - a magical place, that appears when someone needs it, and provides within it what the individual needs at that time. The career path of an artist is often (maybe needs to be) nonlinear. We believe that the most essential thing on this road, connected to the making of the art itself, is to have a community of artists around you with reciprocal support, regardless of age or career stage. This is what The Floating Gallery fosters.
The Floating Gallery is a nomadic space that works as a banner, under which artists come together to exhibit their work on their own terms and build their circle. The Floating Gallery is not fixed in location or consistent in style. Though we ensure that the work is presented with consideration as it would be in a traditional gallery, every show is an opportunity for transformation, a fresh expression.
This occurs naturally because each exhibition at The Floating Gallery is a group show curated by an artist. Our hope is that each show becomes a vehicle for the curating artist (or multiple artists) to explore taste and themes, and a catalyst to bring together groups of artists whom the curator admires. We believe in a spirit of cooperative achievement and have found one of the most bonding endeavors for artists is to show together. We propose that a rising tide lifts all boats. Each exhibition creates opportunities and relationships between artists. Because this is our gallery model, our opening receptions and events are full of like-minded people bringing ideas for future projects.
The Floating Gallery operates on a non-commission model and is made possible through sponsorship by individuals who embrace our mission statement. We are currently working towards receiving our official 501(c)(3) non-profit status. Though the exhibition’s curators are always changing, it is a core group of founding artists who organize and facilitate all endeavors of The Floating Gallery, without whom the project would not be possible. As of this time The Floating Gallery has presented 10 group exhibitions and has shown the work of over 141 artists. We currently have a residency in Los Angeles, California at the Auto Brake Center on Pico and Fairfax.
